A visit with Grandma B

Last Thursday was a PA day for the kids at school. I'm not sure why the schools are having PA days in the middle of the week this year. When we have one I try to go to my moms for the weekend having it on Thursday screws up my plan. I decided to just pull the kids out of school Friday and go up anyway. (as it turns out it was a snow day anyway) On Thrusday we headed up north for a visit. My mom's birthday is on Groundhog day so when she's so close to Wiarton I like to take the kids to the parade when we're there. The kids always love going to visit. It's a nice change from the long days of the winter. Here's some pics of our long weekend away.

Cooking with the kids

A couple weeks ago on a Sunday the kids and I were here not doing too much of anything. Travis wanted to cook something with me. We went through some cookbooks and came across and recipe I had ripped out of a magazine ages ago. It showed how to make homemade perogies. It didn't look too hard so we decided to try. Well as soon as the other kids saw what we were up too we ended up with other helpers. Anyone who has cooked with kids before knows that it is a true test of patience!! After some yelling, reminders to share, and some deep breathing (on my part) we ended up with a tray of perogies that turned out great! I couldn't try them since they're made of everything I'm not supposed to eat, but the kids liked them. It makes it worth the bit of frustration and mess when they like what they made and it adds another good life memory.
Perogies
1LB farmer cheese (not sure what this meant....I used about a cup of cheddar cheese)
1 egg
1/4 tsp salt
Mix, set aside
2 cups flour
2 eggs
2 tsp salt
1/3 to 1/2 cup water
Combine flour, eggs, salt and abit of water at a time. Mix until it becomes a dough. Knead. Cut dough in half and wrap one piece in plastic. With other half roll to 1/4" thickness. Cut dough into 3-4" circles. (I used a heart shaped) For each perogie place about 1tbsp in center of shape. Fold over and crimp edges with a fork. Once done with all dough, bring a pot of water to a boil and cook for 5-7 mins. They will float when done.
